I am curator of a small historical museum in Vermont. We received a donation recently of two hand brass bells, one 10″ in height with a 5 1/2″ diameter base, and the other 5 1/2″ in height with a 2 3/8″ base diameter. I know they were used in a local schoolhouse, but wondered if there was any way to date them, as there are no markings anywhere on either wooden handle or on either bell. I can send pictures, but it has to be through my phone, which would be hard to post on here. But I’d be happy to email them to anyone who thinks there’d be a possibility of even a rough date from simply looking at them.

I would be very grateful for any ideas.

      Thank you,

      Hi Bess!

I will give it a try if you send the photos.

Try to this address, and be sure to let me know it’s from you (curatorbess)!
e-mail: temp.gdm@fastmail.fm (yes the periods are there!)

I volunteer at a local railroad museum and help with identifying donations and queries from there. So I know what you are going through!

I will also post the images here for you so that others can respond too.

      Hi Bess,
I haven’t gotten your bell photos yet, just in case you sent them.
