I BOUGHT THIS BELL (WITH A VERY COOL LOOKING ‘CLAPPER’? – THE PIECE THAT STRIKES THE BELL MAKING IT RING; BIG RING TO IT ALSO!), BUT IT ONLY HAS PART OF IT’S NAME VISIBLE & I NEED HELP IDENTIFYING, AGING & VALUING IT.
IT CAME FROM A STORAGE UNIT AUCTION A FRIEND WON HERE IN MIAMI, ALONG WITH A HEAVILY ENCRUSTED 17TH – 18TH CENTURY SWORD HANDLE, BUCKLE & A SMALL, HEAVY OIL LAMP.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME IDENTIFY THIS BELL WITH THE PART OF THE NAME AVAILABLE?
THANK YOU ALL FOR ANY HELP; IT’S GREATLY APPRECIATED.
PS – I’ve added attached photos of partial name & of clapper (is that correct name?) because I can’t figure out how to place photo into my post; my apologies in advance if this is more difficult (I’m new here) – hopefully the clapper can help someone age or identify it if name isn’t clear enough.
Name on bell appears to end with the letter ‘M’.
IF I MESSED UP ADDING THE NAME AS AN ATTACHMENT – PLEASE SEE PHOTOS OF BELL I PUT IN ALBUM AT: http://www.photobucket.com/shipwreckrelics
AGAIN, I GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY HELP WITH THIS
I see “Siolim….I’m least sure about the first 2 letters……maybe Suolim….possibly the name of the Ship.
I’m guessing, but it looks to be at least 200 yrs. old to me, possibly older! Measurements and weight can help alot w/ I.D. and age….and guessing European origin…the quality of the cast, (or lack of) is also a good clue.
IF it’s signed on the INSIDE, I might gently clean around the letters….should help, esp if letters are engraved. Start w/ a damp cloth, DONT use steel wool, DONT clean the outside. Then give us a good close-up shot….my eyesight’s not what it used to be.
