Recently my father in law came across a very large church bell. We are curious to know more about it and would appreciate any information this group might be able to share with us.
It stands 27 inches tall and is 30 inches wide at it’s widest point. It appears to be cast iron with the wording “National Bell Foundry Company- Ohio”. He said that it is about 7 feet in circumference.
National Bell Foundry Co was in Cincinnati and began operation in the late 1800’s. During that period and into the early 20th century church and school construction in the US was booming and the market for affordable bells was brisk. Most of the steel bell foundries were out of business by the 1920’s. Bells don’t wear out and by that time most buildings and farms that needed a bell had one.
