We have a #4 iron bell at our historic site in Long Beach, CA. It’s been used as a dinner bell to call the ranch hands to meals since the early 20th century. It is marked on the yoke: Phoenix Bell Co. 4 Leavenworth, Kan. Diameter is 19 1/2″. Can anyone tell me about this bell’s maker? Thanks for any info you can offer. Thanks for your patience with a newbie.
Florence: It’s a Hillsboro, Ohio product made by CS Bell Co. You can enter “hillsboro” in the search (above right) for lots of posts. Phoenix Bell was the name of a retailer in Leavenworth, probably a hardware or farm implement dealer. Four was the largest farm bell made by CS. They sometimes trademarked bells for retailers instead of using their own CS Bell logo.
