      Hi,

I am new to the site.
My wife was cleaning at her grandfathers and found a bell in a box. She asked him what it was. He said he didn’t know but told her to keep it.

The bell rings by spinning the dial type things on the sides. I can’t find anything written on it anywhere.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

      Thanks

      Welcome to the ABA website!

I am presuming we are looking at the bell from the top (more or less). From your description and the photo, it appears to be a kind of hotel bell or call bell that is rung by twirling rather than tapping.

There are others who are far more knowledgeable than I who can tell you more about the bell. It would help us if you could tell us the height and width of the bell. Also, what is it mounted on (what kind of a base does it have)?”

It looks like a lovely bell! Does it have any markings on it? Often times tap bells will have a patent date on them near the tap.

I have only just registered, and may not be able to get this information to you. However, I’d appreciate it if you would let me know if you receive this okay.
Your bell as pictured in 2006 is indeed a CALL BELL and was made by the MERIDEN BRITANNIA COMPANY, and listed in their 1886 catalog. Should you like me to photocopy the material I have about your bell and others that they produced, I would be happy to do so.
