We have had an “Old Mission Bell” in our family for over 70 years. It was my parents bell before it became mine. Before that it belonged to my grandparents.
The Bell is approximately 5 inches tall and approximately 5 3/4 across in diameter. The bell is a brass bell that weighs approximately 4 lbs. The clapper holder inside the bell has since snapped off, but we still have the original clapper.
At the base of the bell in tiny raised letters the legend: “Agosto 9 de 1356” and “San Jose Rueca Por Nosotros,”
We would appreciate any information that any one can give us relative to the manufacturer or age of the bell, or anything else for that matter concerning the bell and its history.
I would be happy to send pictures of the bell to anyone who can give me any information relative to it. The bell has a beautiful tone when wrong with the clapper.
This is a souvenir bell replica of the bell at the San Jose Mission in Santa Fe, NM. You can see a picture of the original mission bell on the internet and there is a nice history of the original bell.
