I have a large bronze crotal bell – about 4.5″ in diameter – with the markings:

      AV-PVI

      ALLIRAN

I was told it was an elephant bell, but would like information on the markings and maybe the period it was made. Thanks.

It is a very old horse bell from France: the founder Pierre Alirand, he wrote also Allirand, Alliran, worked in the village Le Puy en Velay (dept. Haute Loire) in the years 1696 and 1708. It’s a very old and precious crotal bell.
