Some of you might remember that we had an exchange of information on this Forum on a table bell representing Joan of Arc. In my case there has been an interesting development which makes me feel that this bell is worthwhile to be mentioned again and this time as my bell of the month.

Recently I found a sculpture in the same style but a lot bigger than the table bell (11 cms. high). The sculpture is about 30 cms. high. All other details are almost identical. However the sculpture is signed by French sculptor “G. Omerth” – Jeanne D´Arc – Princesse Marie” while the table bell bears no marks.

      Hi Manfred,

Your sculpture is the most common representation of Joan of Arc. The Georges Omerth version was probably made around 1900, and seems to be based on an earlier version by Princess Marie of Orléans (1813–1839), daughter of King Louis Philippe of France, made first in marble and then cast in bronze around 1835. It was entitled Joan of Arc in Prayer. The original was installed at Versailles in 1837, and Princess Marie died two years later. The statue was very popular, and was reproduced many times both as a full size version and in smaller sizes.

The following were cast by Susse Frères (Paris) ca. 1850-80.The smaller is 9.5 in (24 cm) and the larger is 13.5 in (34 cm). The sword was cast separately, and may be removed from her hands.
