I am late with my bell object of the month because I only just returned from a long overseas trip. In the mail I found a wonderful X-mas calendar of another German collector and ABA member Arnim Bechtold. I met him once during a bell auction at Heidelberg several years ago and after that he kept sending me his interesting yearly calendar always at X-mas time. What a nice idea of a bell collector who obviously loves his bells and lets others participate! In this year`s edition he shows for each month 12 of his fascinating African bells and that gave me the idea to present the only 2 African bells in my possession for December.

Hope you enjoy and happy X-mas to all of you.

      Manfred,

What an interesting idea and thoughtful gift you received from Arnim! Thanks for sharing it with us. Could you post a picture of the calendar for us all to see, please?

As always, your monthly postings of your bell objects are always welcome!

      Carolyn,

the photos attached show the calendar only in a reduced and somewhat distorted size due to limitations of the computer programme. But I think they are still good enough to transfer the idea. For each month the calendar shows a different bell with a brief description of its African origin at the bottom. Maybe other ABA members have developped a similar project or they have interesting African bells in their own collection and it would therefore be nice if they could add some additional photos here for all of us to see. The Bechtold calendar aroused my interest in African bells since they really show a rich variety of African bell handicraft. Personally I will look out for them in future.

      Manfred

Thanks, Manfred! It’s a beautiful calendar!

Did you know that the ABA issued a calendar (for sale, I presume) for a few years? I really don’t know anything about it, who created it, how many years it was done, etc., so I’m hoping that someone who does know will share some information about it with us!

      Frohe Weihnachten! (Merry Christmas!)

No, Carolyn, I did not know however I think it is an excellent idea to bring this up again as a special promotion for ABA members and outsiders. Of course it would cost money and the normal ABA budget may not allow this. I could however imagine that some members would be willing to make a special contribution for such a good purpose. Let me know in due time if you find out something about the past ABA activities in this respect.
      Best wishes also from here.

Thanks for your response, Manfred. It has got me thinking about the possibility of renewing the calendar project. We now have the ability to sell things online via credit card and, very soon, PayPal, so maybe someone will volunteer to organize such a project. It could be sold via the website in the Special Services section that we hope to add later.

In the meantime, lets hope some people can tell us about the history of the ABA Calendars!
