      Seeking information on the following bell referred to in 8/31/09 posting “GL BELL”
      Date of manufacture, possible use?

      Cast Bronze
      +- 18″ dia
      15.25 H
      Inscription: “G.W. Coffin & Co. & Buckeye Foundry”

      Laura: It was cast between the late 1830’s and the early 1860’s. That is the period Coffin’s name appeared his bells. Most of Buckeye’s large bells bore the year of casting but many smaller ones like yours did not. This size could have been used on a boat or ship, in a school or church, as a fire alarm, or as a farm or plantation bell. Bells sometimes changed hands and uses several times. I have one that began as a ship bell on the Atlantic and years later was used in a Louisiana auction house prior to the Civil War.
