[attachment=0:186u4ocq]C0087-2.JPG[/attachment:186u4ocq] This is similar to the ones on page 109 of Donna Bakers’ Collectible Bells. It is 1.5×4.5 inches with China stamped onthe shoulder. The dress skirt is smooth on sides & back. The metal ball clapper is attached to a bar with wire. The headdress has been attached with a whiteish materal, possibly plaster.

      Hi, Beausone,

Regarding this bell, yes, it is the same bell as you saw in Donna Baker’s book. As she said, it is believed to depict either Queen Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scots, or Queen Victoria. This style of bell appears on online auction sites all the time. What makes yours different is the head dress. Clearly it is not original to the bell.

The bells like this that are made in England usually have finer details than the ones made in China. Although yours has good detail on the dress, you can see that the face is not as good. Often times the China made ones have slanted eyes. Also, they are apt to have nipples marked on the bosom.

Although I know nothing about the head dress, it appears to have an Arabic design to it. I suspect that the head piece was originally attached to something else (probably not a bell) and a previous owner found that it would fit on top of the head so he decided to attach it and make a unique bell. This is speculation on my part.

It’s not unusual for some people to combine parts of two or more different bells. We have had a few educational seminars at ABA conventions over the past several years about bells that people have created. They are often referred to as “marriages”. My mother used to refer to this type of bell as a “mongrel”, a cross between different things, especially if inharmonious or indiscriminate.

I would certainly categorize this bell as a “one of a kind!” But others may have seen one just like it but in my 50 years of collecting, I’ve never seen one of these bells with a head dress on it!

Carolyn, thank you for the info. I haven’t been on site for a while; but after reading about your efforts for revamping the site, I have been checking it out. Looks great!
