Welcome to the ABA! › Bell Talk Forums › Small Bells › Large Horse Crotal Bell
Here is an interesting piece I just obtained.
It’s about 3 ” in diameter, All Brass, including the huge ‘pea’ inside.
Molded horses framed within two bands running at right angles and an interesting 4 banded pattern from the top hole to the horizontal band on each side.
No maker’s marks that I can find, but judging from the marks beside the bands it was actually molded in 4 pieces and assembled. (Shows file marks going underneath each band.)
Horses on top not as detailed as horses on the bottom half.
Anyone recognize it? I haven’t seen one of these before.
The “Classic Bells” site identifies the style as French, with this design from about 1880.
Clearly it’s not that old, more likely a much more modern copy of the design.
The base pattern of the bell is very similar to other French designs I have now found, now that I had an idea where to look.
