Since early summer I’ve been looking for a Fredericktown bell, specifically a Rankin, and recently this surfaced at a local farm auction (Fairfield Co, Ohio). Over the Web, I’ve yet to encounter any images of a Fredericktown example with a tang – they always feature the head-bolt. This one has an eye in the tang through which there is a wedge (possibly original?) that has been shimmed with five square nails at some point. Fortunately the original cradle (confirmed through photos of other Fredericktown survivors) is still with it, with the holes set at approx. 1 o’clock and 7 o’clock. I was wondering how common the tang-tops are, and if there exists any timeline, or window for them, before the advent of the head-bolt. I can post close-up images of the tang.
      Thank you in advance,
      Terry Wharton
