      Hello all –
Our school has an old brass bell made by Meneely Bell Company, Troy NY. It has sat in the school lobby for the past 40 years. Is there any concern in ringing the bell? I don’t want to crack it. It looks in very good condition.

I forgot to mention – it is a 200 pound bell.

There are bells like that ringing that are much older. I don’t think you would have a problem

One additional bit of information, if your bell was made by one of the two Meneely foundries, it is made of bronze (copper and tin), not brass (copper and zinc). To my knowledge, neither of the two Meneely bell foundries ever made brass bells – only bronze.

There are lots of Meneely bronze bells made in the 1850s through the 1880s still ringing every Sunday, so there is no reason you shouldn’t be ringing your bell. Ring it and enjoy it.
