An ABA member in Canada (Roger) has found a bell and wants to know more about it:

I NEED YOUR HELP TO IDENTIFY A BELL MARKED B.R.S. Co. IT’S A SMALL BELL THREE IN. X THREE IN. It’s supposed to be a Rail Road Horse Car Bell and is bronze. The B.R.S. Co. is cast on the skirt.

If you can help, please post a response.

This inquiry was originally sent to the ABA’s Internet Coordinator. Responses are opinions of individuals based on their personal research and knowledge.

A picture would be very helpful. What you describe certainly sounds like a Horse Car Bell. These were small bells that had the initials or name of the Street Railway line cast into the skirt of the bell. They were used on horse drawn trolleys or street railway cars as a warning bell. These were utilized in the latter 19th century and early 20th century until electric trolleys replaced the horse drawn trolleys in most major cities. There was an article on Horse Car Bells several years ago in the Bell Tower, but I am currently at a loss to remember the date or the author. He is a collector of Horse Car Bells and regularly advertises in the Bell Tower for anyone wishing to sell Horse Car Bells. Perhaps Carolyn will be able to help with the date of the article or the member’s name.
