Steve L. in California would like to know:

I have a small collection of German and Swiss cow bells. I’m looking for the best published reference book that would tell me more about European cow bells. Is there such a reference book out there? Thank you very much for your time. Great website. Regards Steve

If you can help, please post a response.

      Hi Steve,

I do not know of any special book on Cow Bells. I also collect them and you can see part of my collection in my website:

Maybe it helps you and gives you additional information about your own collection.
It would be nice to see pictures of your bells.

There is a book on Swiss cowbells that was published in 1996. The author is Dr. Robert Schwaller and the Title is Treicheln Schellen Glocken/Sonnailles et Cloches. As you might surmise from the title, it is in German and French – no English. The book is quite good (except for the language problem) and is basically divided into two sections. The first deals with the treicheln or forged bells and the second deals with bronzeglocken or cast bronze bells. Each section has a list of makers, by province, that shows the time periods during which their bells were made. Each maker is then featured with some pictures of their bells and illustrations of the maker’s marks.

The address of the author is Glockenbuch, Postfach 57, CH-3185 Schmitten, Switzerland.

      Received from Kurt in Munich:

Steve is looking for a reference book about German and Swiss Cow Bells. Such a book does not exist – according to my knowledge. But it is existing a wonderful book about the history and the many, many bell founders of cow bells in Switzerland. It has the title: Treicheln, Schellen, Glocken and (in French language) Sonnailles and Cloches

The book has been written in German and French language by our ABA member Dr. Robert Schwaller in Switzerland in the year 1996. Robert is expert for all kind of Swiss bells and he is expert too for animal bells of the whole world.

I have mentioned this book already in my email to you at Jan. 29, 2010. But I think only a few ABA members know it. And is of interest only for collectors of cow bells. But those should have it!
