      NORWICH, CT (WFSB) –

Lots of cities and towns have bells, but not many have their bells on demand for CD purchase.

The Friends of Norwich Bells have recorded 45 of them and are making them available to the public.

Actually, most of the bells were recorded by Kevin Harkins on a simple Olympus field recorder.

The purpose of the project is to not only capture the sounds of the present, but also preserve sounds of the past.

“We’re trying to raise money to help the repairs to some of the bells around town,” Harkins said.

First on the list of bell repair projects is the one in the belfry of the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. An electric striker was damaged by lightening and the bell will need to be replaced.

The Friends of Norwich Bells also has a DVD and is starting to photograph bells as well.
