My grandmother has an array of really neat bells. The one I want to ask about has an elephant base. The actual bell is on the elephants back. There is a bird on top of the bell that activates the hammer. Unfortunately, the elephant is missing a foot, but I’m more interested in where this elephant bell could have come from. The blanket on the elephant’s back, as well as the symbols on the bell suggest China, but there is an origami crane on the bell which tells me Japan. I haven’t been able to find any symbols anywhere on the bell. Even after taking it apart, there is nothing to find. The bell itself is brass, but I’m sure the elephant and the bird are made of something else. Can anyone tell me anything else about this bell? This will be a gift from my grandmother to my sister, so I am more interested in the history of this piece.
