I was wondering if anyone here collects Renaissance bronze bells? I know there are collectors out there, but haven’t found any group specific to the subject.
In any event, I have a bronze hand/table bell from the 16th century and would like a bit more information about it if possible. It is inscribed at the top with the words “GOT BOVEN AL” and on the bottom rim of the bell as follows: “IAER IT GHEGOTEN MDLIII”. I take the inscriptions to mean, respectively, “God above all” and “Year Cast 1553”. There are four images cast on the bell, two depicting the Virgin and Child on a crescent moon, and the other two are archangels (?) presumably all taken from the book of Revelation.
Any information on who may have cast the bell, what type of person might have used such a bell, etc. is most appreciated! Lastly, I’m interested in selling the bell but aside from auction houses such as Sotheby’s or Christie’s which have sold similar bells in the past according to my research, I can’t find collectors. If anyone on the forum is interested, please PM me. Thanks very much to you all!
