We just purchased a bell that has written across the top – The C S Bell Co, Hillsboro Ohio #4. It is about 19.5 inches across at the bottom. There are two A-frame pieces at each end to hold the bell. It has No 24 C on them. I don’t think this is a farm bell but one from a belfry. Any info you can give us on this bell would be appreciated.

Number 4 was the largest farm bell marketed by CS and was supported by A stands instead of a post-mounted cradle. A small belfry was sometimes built atop the summer kitchen or another outbuilding to house the #4 bell. A pair of stands made for a 24 inch bell have been substituted on yours in place of the smaller originals. Number 4 was sometimes used atop school houses or even small churches probably due to the budget not allowing a larger bell. There is much concerning CS Bell Co on the internet and you can enter “hillsboro” in the search here (above right) to read many posts.

Thank you for the reply. Did this bell have a handle or was it on a wheel to make it ring?

It used a rope arm (handle or crank). A machine shop can design a replacement easily.
