I was asked a question that I can’t answer. I’m hoping someone can:
In 1971, when I first moved to Vermont, I was renting a trailer from a local farmer. His herd of cows would pass my door several times a day with the lead cow, and its bell, followed by all the others (I was tempted to write, “all the udders,” but I won’t). Anyway, I asked the farmer how he decided which cow was going to wear the bell and be the lead cow. His response was that I had it all wrong: whichever cow was given the bell became the lead cow. The cows would follow the belled animal whoever it was.
Is this really true?
Thanks for any help that I can forward to this person.
