Hello I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little bit more about this bell. It was purchased in Pennsylvania and has no marking on it. The measurements are as follows. The diameter of the bell is 19.5″ and the yoke, crank, and bell weigh 86 lbs., the clap weighs 5.4 lbs. and the upright weighs 18.6 lbs. for a total of 110 lbs. Can anyone tell me how old this bell is and it’s value if any. Is this a school, church, or fire bell? Thank you for your Help.

Farm bells the size of yours usually have a set of A frame supports instead of a single cradle. The counterweight pull is also not commonly seen. They were sometimes used for other purposes (church, school, alarm, etc). From the late 19th well into the 20th century nearly every rural home had one to call field workers for meals. According to my grandfather, his plow horses would head for the house when they heard the bell. They knew it was feeding time for them too! Yours is the largest size, in excellent condition, worth around $300. Some might think I’m low but these bells are still fairly plentiful. Many thousands were made, most from the 1870’s into the 1920’s, by several US foundries. The reproductions on the market today do not match the old ones for sound.

…and when you directly quote (without credit) the information offered, and use it to promote your monetary gain in your auction listing the very next day, do you compensate the resource?

Absolutely, just tell me the email address to send the payment to. Let’s say 5% of the final price. I will credit the source on the listing today. Thanks for noticing that.
