Just had an email from my local expert about this bell.
Thought I’d share this little extract:
‘On 7 March 1923, someone went to use the bell to alert the brigade of a fire involving a thatched roof in Sway Road and on the first pull to ring the bell the pull system which was rusted through fell off! Urgent repairs were then made to make it all work again.’
No news about the fire. Seems like there was more concern for the poor old bell!
Peter, I went to your blog and tried to leave a post but I don’t have Google account. Very interesting history on that bell. And your town and the countryside are very lovely. Looks like a very tranquil environment. Great pictures.
