We have a 643 lb. bronze cannon, 55″ long, made for the New York State Militia maybe ca. 1820. We’re trying to find out who cast it since the foundry name is not marked on the weapon. In those days bronze founders who could cast big bells generally also cast bronze cannons. We’re not positive this was cast in New York but since it is marked “SNY” for New York State Militia property, it was likely cast in New York.

Does anyone know which if any New York bronze foundries were known for casting cannons as well as bells?

Here’s an Ebay discussion on the same topic with lots of pix. If you need the pix re-posted here, I can do that.

Ask Barney. One of the country’s most knowledgable cannon experts. And a nice person.
