Alexander Kovalchuk – Blacksmith, Sculptor, Folk Artist, Bell Maker
Another example of the creative metal bells coming from Ukraine. Alexander Kovalchuk does not cast bells, but assembles them from sheets of copper, brass, german silver, and other copper alloys. These materials are both ductile and maleable so they can be both stretched and compressed with the techniques of a blacksmith, often using dies and tools of his own creation, then soldered together and colored with a chemical patina. This is all hand work, created one at a time, so two are never exactly alike. He makes both larger sculptures and smaller bells, often whimsical in design.
