I found this bell washed up in Mobile Bay Ala. after Hurricane Katrina the bell is 7 inches across an 9-1/2 tall with ISIS or 1818 written on the bottom, also the bell has some strange marking’s around the bottom no one can I.D. Still has a lot of coral buildup up in the bottom of the bell. See what you think. Lamar

It’s a Spanish style bell. Whether it is old or not is difficult to tell since many of these style bells are being manufactured today in Mexico and “aged” for the tourist trade. Perhaps Max Kurillo will be able to help date it as he is our ABA expert on Spanish Mission Bells.

Lamar, very nice bell clean lines. If you subscribe to the Bell Tower you can get the next issue and there is a seven page article on these type of bells, Carolyn Whitlock will be happy to arrange a subscription. It (the Bell Tower) contains an amazing ammount of information. Where your bell came from no one will ever know, probably attached to someones house that got washed away, the bell wanted to get back home. Your bell is a Mexican bell dated circa 1950. It’s a fine looking bell clean it up and make up stories about how you found it. Put it on you patio, yard mabe in you bathroom (it might be too large for that). I have elderly people tell me that they have a bell in the bath room for emergencies. Most of all enjoy it, its had a hard life. Max
