      what difference is there between a bell that is shorter than it is wide and one that is taller than it is wide? (sound, i guess)

      It has to do with sound production. In general, Bronze bells are taller than they are wide and steel bells are shorter than they are wide. Additional variations occur with regard to bell thickness at the skirt vs at various points in the body and tend to be thinest at the crown. The wall thickness effects the vibrations of the bell and the overtones that are produced.
