I have a bell on a pole in my yard that was given to my father 30 years ago. It is marked American Casting Company Birmingham, Alabama. It has a number 3 on it. I would like to restore it. The bell is missing the crank but I found a place to order that. I would like to know how old the bell is and what color was the bell originally? Thanks for any info!
Rob: Enter “Birmingham Alabama” in the search here (upper right). There are numerous posts about this foundry. Steel bells were sold with a painted flat-black finish. Some makers painted the bell part bronze to contrast with the black mounting components.
