      It seems that the vast majority of American bells are mounted to arched yokes and individual A-stands, while most European setups use straight yokes and bell frames rather than A-stands. A straight yoke allows for a faster peal speed, since the bell actually swings rather than cants. An arched yoke supposedly reduces lateral forces on the structure it is mounted to, but makes the bell ring slower. What other advantages are there of one yoke style over the other?

      In the US, bells are usually rung via tolling device or by rocking on the frame. They are usually not rung in changes as they are in the UK. Tuned bells are usually rung via chime or carillon arrangement with staionary mounted bells and a cable system attached to a clavier or by an electronic ringing system.

      I was asking mainly about the yoke that is attached to the bell and allows it to pivot. In America and a few parts of Europe (mainly in the Netherlands), the yoke is arch-shaped, so that the pivot point is around the waist of the bell.

      In most of Europe, however, the yoke is a straight bar of metal or wood which the bell hangs from. The pivot point of this kind of bell is right at the crown or the canons.

      I’m not referring to dead-hung bells, such as those in carillons or in Eastern Orthodox or Latin American churches.

      When the axis of rotation is at the center of gravity of the bell, it requires less work to swing the bell. The weight of the crown and shoulder of the bell reduce the work load required to swing the bell. The British bells often have a heavy wooden addition to the yoke which serves somewhat the same purpose.

      I suppose that since the vast majority of European installations are motorized, the extra force required for straight-yoke mounting is not a noticeable factor. If I were installing new bells, I would use straight yokes for their faster peal speed. Also, the European method of using “jungle gym”-shaped frames rather than A-stands mounted to the floor allows better clearance from the floor, allows for less structural movement, and makes maintenance access easier.
