      ABA Bell Calendars

(15 Dec 2014) Manfred and Carolyn were discussing the ABA Bell Calendars
      issued about 25 years ago.
      See: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5368

(4 Jan 2015) Thanks to Bill Martin, I now have copies of all four calendars (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993) compiled and published by The Special Bell Tower Committee. The 1990 version was offered for $6.00 each plus $1.25 postage, and about 1750 copies were sold. The 1991 version also was offered for $6.00 each plus $1.25 postage, but no information is available as to the number sold for this or later years. The 1992/93 versions were offered for $7.00 each plus $1.25 postage. The calendars are 11″ x 17″, stapled and folded at the middle, printed in color on glossy paper of about 80 lb stock, with a separate picture for each end cover and for each month. Each was accompanied by an 8 page booklet, 8.5″ x 11″, with more information about the bells in each of the pictures.

Thanks, Alan! So, if the 1991 calendar was the second edition, then I presume it would be safe to say the first one was published for 1990. Does anyone know for how many years these calendars were made?

      Carolyn,
What a great source of information these calendars are, I would love to see this happen again providing it would be financially feasible. Jim

Hello, I have the 1990 calender here in front of me. I don’t know how many years the calenders were made but will try to find out. I believe Herb Stafford took the photographs, and Herb and Kay had the calendars made. Herb was an excellent photographer and frequently took photos for The Bell Tower, and gave advice to others on how to take clear photos.

I would LOVE to see this type of thing done again. What a GREAT way to learn about different types of bells and to stir interest in the association

I love the idea of the calendar. It might make a nice gift for people who have an interest in bells, but are not ABA members. Maybe we could get a few new members that way.

      Peggy Long writes:

I was enjoying the forum and hit the ABA Calendar chat. Herb & Kay [Stafford] started the project in 1990 with a visit to my mother’s [house] to photograph her bells for that issue & again in 1991 many of the photos were featured along with some other members who had some rare finds! I forget without searching my house if there was a 1993 issue–by then it did not generate as much money for ABA when the novelty wore off!! Initially many people bought Christmas gifts in bulk but by 1993 the orders were slim & families who did not collect were not into enjoying like we collectors do!! The cost of production was barely recovered & the project ended with people returning to the Bell Tower as the main bell education resource! I doubt that the revival would work unless limited to decade issues!!
