The first photo present some Aztec gold bells with nice patina.
The next is a Gold bell Mixtec/Aztec found in Vera Cruz, Mexico and cast ; c. 1200Ð1521
This bell may depict the patron of fire known as Xiutecuhtili to the Aztecs and Iha Ndikandii to the Mixtecs of Oaxaca. Bearded, and displaying two fangs, the deity wears an elaborate headdress and carries a shield and atlatl. Bells like this were worn by individuals of high status in Aztec and Mixtec society.
Mixtec gold pieces typically have movable parts, such as suspended bells that strike each other and sound when the wearer moves.
The last picture present Mixtec cast gold bells from Tehuantepec, Mexico and located in National Museum of the American Indian Washington D.C.
Some other precolumbian bells you can see in my collection:|

272d – French Bronze Cast Iron Figural Mechanical Hotel Tap Service Call Bell c.1880
Figural bronze cherub or angel mechanical call bell made in France cir. 1880s.Tap down on the top and it has a long crisp tone. Works perfect and has no damage. It is in original condition and has not been polished. The size is aprox. 7 ” tall.
The dating is correct, but the made in France attribution is ridiculous,
as this is another of the New England mechanical bells with quatrefoil base.
272e – LARGE INTERCHANGEABLE CYLINDER MUSIC BOX BY “LIUNIVERSELLE” WITH 3 BELLS c1880
LARGE RARE OLD ROSEWOOD MUSIC BOX.MADE IN SWITZERLAND IN AROUND 1880. IT IS IN WORKING ORDER, AND HAS ALL ITS TEETH AND TIPS. WHICH OF COURSE IS ONE OF THE THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR. ALL OF THE INLAY INCLUDING THE BOXWOOD STRINGING IS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE FOR IT’S AGE,WITH ONLY MAYBE A COUPLE OF VERY SMALL MARKS. IT HAS A GREAT SOUND AND ALSO THREE BELLS. THE COMB AND THE CYLINDER MEASURE 6.1/2″ INCHES.
THE MUSIC BOX MEASURES 21.1/4″ WIDE X 12.1/2″ DEEP AND 9.3/4″ HIGH. IT HAS THE MAKERS NAME ON THE MOVEMENT AND THE VERY LOW NUMBER “285” ON THE MOVEMENT. AS THERE WERE MANY MUSIC BOX MAKERS IN SWITZERLAND IN THE LATE 1800s. BUT AS YOU CAN SEE IT HAS BEEN KEPT IS IN VERY GOOD ORDER. IT ALSO HAS A LEVER TO STOP THE BELLS, IF SO DESIRED.
THE SOUND IS IN TUNE AND CLEAR AND WE ALL KNOW THERE IS NOTHING TO REPLACE THE SOUND OF AN OLD MUSIC BOX. IT HAS A LOCK AND A KEY WITH A TASSEL (BUT A REPLACEMENT KEY). ALSO PLEASE NOTE THE WONDERFUL SHIPS WHEEL WINDER, WHICH IS THE TRADEMARK OF THE COMPANY. AND ON THE RIGHT SIDE AT THE TOP IS THE CYLINDER. AND BELOW THE START & STOP. ALL ARE WORKING.

268d – ANTIQUE SILVER PLATED FIGURAL BELL of OLD WOMAN with NODDING HEAD c1880
Here we have an antique silver plated figural bell, 4 1/4″, probably Victorian, modeled as an old lady. Unlike most such bells, her head is attached to the clapper and pivot and therefore nods when moved. The modelling is extremely detailed, especially in picking out all the folds in her dress and her bonnet. She has a dog underarm and is resting on a stick.
Another of the so-called Old Mother Hubbard nodders, this one in silver plate, but not marked “Elkington” as some of the other silver plate versions are.

268f – 1901 RARE ANTIQUE SOLID SILVER BERTHOLD MULLER FIGURAL TABLE BELL – 173g/5.56ozs
Presented for auction is this Stunning Rare Antique Edwardian Solid Silver Cast Table Bell, hallmarked for Chester 1901 by Berthold Muller.
This stunning rare antique solid silver cast table bell has a beautiful standing maiden infront of a tree as the handle with the bell itself being superbly embossed with foliates and scrolls in amongst birds, cherubs and mythical beasts and a banded inscription Mathevs Marcvs Lvcas Johannes for Matthew Mark Luke & John. It is hallmarked to the bottom edge with the makers mark BM for Berthold Muller a famous importer of quality silver items, the Lion Passant denoting solid sterling silver, the Date letter A for 1901, the Import letter F and the Chester assay office Wheatsheaf.
Measuring 4″ high to the top of the handle by 2 1/2″ in diameter across the bottom approx. It is in excellent used condition with no dents, dings, splits or repairs and weighs a hefty 173 grams or 5.56 troy ounces by my postal scales. A stunning very rare antique Edwardian solid silver cast table bell in excellent used condition.
Evangelist bell base, probably made in Germany, and intended for export to Britain.

260b – klingel,,glocke,auktionsklingel,rezeptionsklingel,schelle,messing
erbstück,alte klingel aus messing, junge mit vermutlich tambourin und ein affe,der auf der klingel steht,
wenn man den affen dreht,ertönt die unter ihm liegende glocke,13 cm breit,14 cm hoch
jingle bell, bell,auction bell, reception bell, brass
heirloom, antique brass bell, boy with probably tambourine and a monkey standing on the bell,
if you turn the ape, the bell below it rings, 13 cm wide, 14 cm high
This appears to be a squeeze bell – squeeze the movable lever toward the fixed lever, and the bell rings. I would assume that the monkey was attached to the upper end of the vertical shaft that the movable lever rotates to ring the bell, so if you squeeze the levers the bell will ring and the monkey rotate. However, the seller says the bell is activated by turning the monkey, and does not mention the levers. Perhaps it has become disabled over time? A friend who collects these mechanical bells told me: “The mechanisms are very touchy. Of all the ones we have only one came to us in working condition. I have even had to manufacture tiny missing parts in two of them.”
260c – 19thC Bronze brass lady bell nude lady and devil mephisto faust
Very old bronze not brass lady bell made in the mid to late 19thC. The bell is a cast piece with great patina that only age can acquire. The bell has a subject matter of Faust ? Or specifically mephisto and the witch. The item may have been made for a London gentlemen’s club like the Hell fire club or even an occult group like the golden dawn with Aleister Crowley and Israel Regardie etc? Just guessing but is an unusual piece and may have been used in rituals or simply summoning attention. The bell measures 6.75″ high, is very heavy for its size weighing 1228g.
It makes for a good story, as long as you don’t believe much of it. The bell is brass, not bronze as the seller claims, and was certainly not made in mid 19C. Casting details are not great, and there are better examples around. Commonly known as the St Christopher bell, apparently invoking the devil and Faust doubles the sale price.
260d – Antique GEORG JENSEN Sterling Silver Art Nouveau Dinner Bell
This auction is for an extremely rare Georg Jensen sterling silver dinner bell. This bell is about 3.5″ tall and weighs 77 grams. It is designed in a biomorphic Art Nouveau style with open work petals and a bud finial. This bell has developed a nice patina over the years and there are no dents, cracks, or repairs. The bell is marked 80, Denmark, the GI mark , Sterling , and 925. The GI mark was used from 1915-1930, but 925 silver was only used after 1927, so I believe this bell dates from 1927-1930, and was designed by Georg Jensen himself. I have been told that this bell is the Blossom pattern, but I have not been able to find another example anywhere online.
An expert in Georg Jensen silver just told me the bell is not the Blossom pattern, and that they had never seen this design before. I think it’s possible that it is a custom made or experimental piece.

258e – Antique 19thC Jester / Mr Punch & Tent Figural Brass Maids Table Call Bell
This is a Period original item, not a reproduction or copy.
The Clapper is secure and works as intended.
There is a crack around the Neck of the Jester, this will only move apart about 1mm when pulled, it is not fragile and cannot turn or detach itself, I have shown the Crack open and closed.
Obviously this has no affect on the working of the Bell, the Handle is still perfectly strong, serviceable and is firmly attached to the Main Body.
There is a small hole to the Tent as shown, despite this the Bell has a good loud and clear ring.
It shows nice surface wear and although it has been cleaned along the way has good overall patination from age and use and a great look.
An attractive collectible, gift, and /or decorative accessory.
All the above is as shown comprehensively in the many pictures, please examine them in close up before you bid, to satisfy yourself as to condition, suitability, etc. of the item(s) shown.
I always show items in their true light, and will never deliberately hide a negative or detrimental aspect.
The Bell measures approx’ :- 12.0 cms High, 6.90 cms Widest.
This auction made two persons very happy (the seller who received far more that might be reasonably expected, and a relieved second-high bidder who “dodged a bullet”), and one person very unhappy (the high bidder who paid about four times a reasonable value). We have previously seen one of these in perfect condition sell in the $100 range. If you check the bidding, there were two bidders who each entered a very high bid in the last few seconds of the auction in an attempt to prevent someone else from obtaining it. Sic transit gloria mundi.
258f – Victorian Butchers Shop Nickel Plated Iron Pig Desk / Counter Bell c.1880
This is a nickel plated iron butchers shop counter bell in the form of a pig. It has an internal clockwork mechanism & is activated by pressing the nose or the tail. It has glass eyes which look original & it is in working order but could do with servicing/cleaning the clockwork mechanism to give a clearer ring.
It is stamped RGM 153419 to the underside
CONDITION The tip of the pigs tail is missing.
The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners.
DIMENSIONS Length 15cm
This item is the opposite case of the previous item. Each has a flaw or flaws, but this one sold for about one third of the usual sale price, while the previous one sold at about three times the usual price.
I can’t speak to the source of the bell.
If you are missing the mount you will probably want something like this.
You may be able to buy one by itself or construct your own.
You may also want a bellrope. You could buy one at a nautical store or on eBay,
but there are Internet instructions for weaving one yourself.

A MONKEY BLACKSMITH SCENE IN BRONZE
MISSING THE BELL PUSH BETWEEN THE MONKEY’S PAWS.
CONTAINER FOR FREE MATCHES?
BEAUTIFUL OBJECT FOR SHOWCASE OR COLLECTION.
Always some confusion as to just what the monkey is doing. The large tub looks like a mortar, in which case he would have been grinding something. Other activities have been suggested, though the idea of a blacksmith or a match holder are new to me.
This is sort of a project piece, in need of restoration. The seller mentions the missing plunger shaft between the monkey’s paws. It should screw on to the shaft at the bottom of the mortar in Pic 3. The small tub on the right side is an inkwell, which should have a porcelain ink cup. The bell mechanism, Pic 4, is hanging crookedly for some reason.
The pictures below show two of these bells in slightly different trim, and a related monkey-turtle that uses the same plunge bell mechanism.
176b – Petit bronze doré XIX éme – Araignée sonnette de table

Small gilt bronze XIX century – Spider table bell
Very rare bronze object acting as a bedside or table bell push.
The bottom has a small hole to allow an electric wire to pass thorough.
Length: 6 cm (2.4 in)
We have seen a similar hanging bell push previously. The seller mentions it could be used on a bedside table.
I am not sure I would like to wake up in the middle of the night, want to call a servant for a drink of water, and encounter that object. 😕

The table bell is about 17 cm high and of course works.
Activated by turning the knob at the center of the bell.

Another German seller, lousy pictures, only local sales, no PayPal offered,
so once again the item sells for a fraction of its normal value.
Zoomorphism is the shaping of something in animal form or terms. Examples include:
Art that imagines humans as non-human animals;
Art that portrays one species of animal like another species of animal;
Art that creates patterns using animal imagery, or animal style;
Deities depicted in animal form, such as exist in ancient Egyptian religion;
Cartozoology: The science of discovering and studying animals street layouts as they appear in maps;
Therianthropy: the ability to shapeshift into animal form;
The tendency of viewing human behaviour in terms of the behaviour of animals, analogous to anthropomorphism, which views animal behaviour in human terms
The word derives from the Greek ζωον (zōon), meaning animal, and μορφη (morphē), meaning shape or form.
Early religions attributed to animals unsuspected powers.
Strength elephant, monkey ability, ferocity wolf, dog or cat loyalty, all these things have been explaining the different forms …
Bells were also associated with these wild animals and people have changed in totem.
For domestic animals, humans turn bells in power tools to protect them or make them more beautiful.
Thus were created the bells for cattle, spread all over the world, in all cultures and ancient civilizations:
This is my album including some of most wellknown bells for cattle.
But also you all know about how animals was associated with bells.
Her there are my zoomorphic bells :
And I’m sure trere are a lot of other.
Companions – Monkey Drummer & Monkey Girl (12 cm, 4.7 in, by Yuri)
Monkey Girl (12 cm, 4.7 in, by Yuri)
Another bell from Yuri Lazur, companion to his Monkey Drummer (above).
151a – Bronze hand bell, decorated in relief with figures
This is a solid bronze hand bell, with a very good patina, decorated in relief with figures – birds (possibly swans), stylised heads and architectural detail. No idea of age.
Perfect condition other than the fact that the original clapper has been replaced, (I assume), by a small steel clapper attached by a plastic thread. Slight rough place to underside of rim, but this does not appear to be damage. Height is 13 cms (5.2 in).
Clapper is a replacement, as possibly is the handle, but the base is the most interesting part. Typical lost wax bronze figural, with a three panel repeat, relatively high relief, c.1900. Bells like this often slip by almost unnoticed, but the quality is better than 99% of their eBay companions.
151b – Antique 1900 Cast Iron Figural Devil or Brownie Desk Bell
An antique Victorian desk bell, patent date of July 9 1900 underneath, a brownie or devil, figural piece, you push the little forked tail to activate the bell, this winds by twisting the bell itself, the clockwork mechanism works reluctantly when it is wound and the bell unscrewed, the spring is intact and everything is present and the mechanism does work- I think it probably just needs an oiling- in any case sold as found might need some monkeying, surface is tarnished/ patinated- see pics- no cracks or breaks.
American version of the more expensive bronze French door/alarm bell. Activated by pressing either the tail or the pointed “tongue”. Theory is that you lean it against the door of your hotel room, and the bell will sound if the door is opened.
151c – Antique Victorian Art Nouveau French Bronze Figural Table Bell Marble Base
This is a really nice piece, a lovely bronze highly ornate, detailed table bell with a marble base. The condition appears to be very good, it has a crack in one of the balls (pic. 6), which does not attract attention at all, I only mention it for full disclosure purposes. It features a lovely swirling vines design, we believe all of the swirls to be as they should, however, some could possibly be bends, no weak spots. The construction is very sturdy and the bell resonates quite loudly in a pleasing tone. It is heavy at about 12 oz., it measures 3.5″ tall, the oval base measures 3 1/8″ x 4.25″.
A new bell from Yuri Lazur (Kiev, Ukraine – Sculptor, Painter & Designer), who did the Leprechaun.

Satyr (12.5 cm, 5.1 in, by Alisa)
Wikipedia: In Greek mythology, a Satyr is one of a troop of male companions of Pan and Dionysus with goat-like (caprine) features, including a goat-tail, goat-like ears, and sometimes a goat-like phallus. By contrast, in Roman Mythology there is a similar concept with goat-like features, the faun being half-man, half-goat. Greek-speaking Romans often use the Greek term saturos when referring to the Latin faunus, and eventually syncretize the two. In myths they are often associated with pipe-playing.
Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music, and companion of the nymphs. He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. With his homeland in rustic Arcadia, he is recognized as the god of fields, groves, and wooded glens; because of this, Pan is connected to fertility and the season of spring.
Bell # 1 is definitely Indian. It represents Lord Hanuman who was born a monkey and became a man due to his devotion to Rama. This is a relatively new bell (<20 years old). One face is that of a monkey and the other a face of a man. Older versions are heavy and ornately carved. Lakshmi has a female face and 4 arms. Bell # 2 is also probably Indian, but could be from West Africa. It is also modern and does not appear to have any particular history.

117h – RARE ANTIQUE FRENCH BRASS FIGURAL HOTEL DESK BELL MONKEY TURTLE FLAG
A very rare, antique, French, brass, hotel desk bell.
It features a monkey wearing a jockey’s cap & riding a turtle. He has wire reins & is holding a flag that reads “TRAIN DE PLAISIR”. The monkey’s tail curls around the flagpole. You push down on the flagpole to ring the bell.
It measures about 7 1/4″ (18.5 cm.) tall & 4″ (10 cm.) long.
It is in excellent condition save for the turtle which is missing one of his ruby glass eyes.
It has no maker’s marks that I can find.
I find this bell the most interesting of the lot. Not for its condition, which is somewhat rough, but just for the fact that it appears on the market. I have never seen another for sale. It is one bell that deserves to be called rare.
The staff and banner are brass, the monkey and base may be either brass or gilt. It needs a good cleaning to find out. Some are all gilt. Others may be a mixture of gilt, brass, and bronze.
The best I have encountered is shown at left below. The contrast between gilt and dark bronze is quite striking. The monkey also has a purse and nose ring. Where can you find one for sale? I wish I knew.
The one at below right is another in this group. The monkey has the same jockey cap, plus an apron, and appears to be washing clothes. The small clothes basket to the right houses an ink container.
117i – ATQ HEAVY CAST BRONZE NODDER BELL SITTING SETTER DOG ON PILLOW WITH PUPPIES
This gorgeous cast bronze bell is in the shape of a dog, possibly a Setter of some sort. Two little puppies are next to her, with one pushing its head through her legs. There are very crisp details on the bell, and the dogs. The tail is the handle, and the head is attached to the brass clapper inside, so it moves when the bell is rung, which means it’s the nodder. The clapper is heavy brass, with signs of green patina on it, which indicates that it is a true antique and not a modern reproduction. Although this is quite heavy for its size, the tone of the ring is high pitched and very clear.
* 3 ½” high. 2 ¼” across the base.
* 11 ounces.
* No identifiable problems.
I deleted some of the nonsense in the seller’s description, but some remains. It is a hard sell that is not needed in this case, and anyone interested in buying this bell obviously knows more about it than s/he does.
This, of course, is the Mama Dog nodder, the less often encountered companion to Mama Cat. It seems to be properly rigged as a nodder.
An uncommon bell, but not really rare. I’d say the sale price was about 50% higher than it should be, the result of two bidders, each of whom “had” to have it.
109d – Brass Lady Bell Table Bell Queen French Rococo Baroque Dress Ornament Vintage
This beautiful brass lady bell in the form of possibly a queen comes in excellent condition and would make a great addition to any bell or brass collection. This rare bell is one of the nicest I have come across!
She weighs 370g unboxed and measures approx 4.5 inches (11.5cm) high x 2.25 inches (5.5cm) wide.
By far the best of the four lady bells in this group, and the most elaborate with the Rococo design.
Wikipedia: Rococo, also referred to as “Late Baroque”, is an 18th-century artistic movement and style, a reaction against the grandeur, symmetry and strict regulations of the Baroque, especially that of the Palace of Versailles. Rococo artists opted for a more jocular, florid and graceful approach to Baroque art and architecture. Rococo art and architecture in such a way was ornate and made strong usage of creamy, pastel-like colours, asymmetrical designs, curves and gold. Unlike the more politically focused Baroque, the Rococo had more playful and often witty artistic themes.
The following photos of Rococo costume are from paintings of Madame du Pompadour,
the third and last “official chief mistress” of Louis XV. According to the Queen, with
whom she was friendly, “If there must be a mistress, better her than any other.”
109e – Stunning Art Nouveau Dinner Gong
A fantastic Art Nouveau dinner gong. I am not sure of the material. it has certainly been plated as overcleaning has brought out a slight bronze/brass colour underneath. Wikipedia: WMF is a tableware manufacturer, founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige, Germany. In 1880, it merged with another German company and became known as the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik. Around 1900, they were the world’s largest producer and exporter of silver-plated household metalware, mainly in the Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau style. Items from this time are highly collectible and often expensive. The company is still in business, concentrating now in the commercial and hotel markets.
The hallmark places this item in the 1910-1918 period.
