Re: Re: So, what is this worth? (Part 71)
Contemporary Russian Table Bells
A Russian company called VEL has been manufacturing table bells for about 10 years. Many of the first group were sold on eBay. They now have a second group, but not as many have reached the Western market.
There is also at least one new source that has appeared in the past three years, possibly more than one source, most of them lady figurine bells in the 4″ – 4.5″ size. These bells are generally sold in Russia in the
$50 – $75 price range. Some of them are now appearing on eBay, targeted to collectors in the USA and Britain. In the eBay listings, they are often described as RARE, VERY RARE, and/or ANTIQUE. They may be “rare” to Western collectors in that they have seen few of them, but they are definitely not “antique”.
Some of the designs are interesting, though some have rather strange and exaggerated details such as impossibly thin waists and necks and oversized heads. They are said to be lost wax bronze, some are better made than others, but don’t expect something like Gerry Ballantyne or Gorham made. I have seen a number of them, and the casting details are often rather poor. Most of the pictures show full length shots, but you will find few or no closeup shots, perhaps for good reason. Samples of three are shown below.
