bronze hand bell
beautiful altar bell or call bell in perfect condition, works, highly crystalline sound
Total length: 20 cm, diameter of the bells: 8.5cm
One of the Connecticut made gong bells from the design of Ezra Cone.
Somehow wound up in France, offered at a low price,
but nobody knew what it is and it drew no bids.
More pictures and information about these bells follows.
This is often called a Muffin bell because of its shape, or sometimes a Fire Alarm bell. It is based on a patent issued to Ezra Cone in 1868 and made by the Gong Bell Mfg. Co. He described it as a (double-chiming) call bell, and his patent application read:
” Be it known that I, Ezra G. Cone, of East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Bell; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. My invention consists in the combination, with a suitable handle, of two gong-shaped or open-mouthed bells, provided with a suitable clapper or clappers, whereby I am enabled to produce a bell, for calling persons to their meals, having a more melodious sound than bells for the same purpose heretofore constructed.”…
The bells were made in various diameters, but the one above is a common size.

BRONZE TABLE BELL, SIGNED ALEXANDRE CHARPENTIER

Not much information, and only two rather dark pictures, but enough people must have recognized its quality so as to sell for a respectable amount.
We have seen this bell previously as Manfred Bicker’s August 2013 bell of the month:
Also in Part 178d:

Old table bell 800 silver hallmark. Bruckmann eagle Harvest Garden symbolism
Height approx 12.5cm x 9cm diameter status, total weight approx 260 grams
Bell is triggered b=by turning the knob
Shows signs of age and slightly crooked at the inner edge of the stand at one side
Overall, a nice silver work
An unusual mechanical bell, solid silver, and exquisite detailing.
Personally I rank it much higher than the rather ordinary bell that follows below.
262d – ANTIQUE WINGED CHERUB SHOP HOTEL COUNTER RECEPTION BELL BRASS SILVER PLATE
A very attractive hotel counter bell, in good working condition, turn the little knob in the middle of the bell and a continuous ringing sound emits for the duration of the turning of the knob. As seen, very pretty and unusual, antique dating to around 1890. Silver plated over brass or bronze with the brass bleeding through. Measuring approx 7 inches high x 5 1/2 inches wide.
Seller says the casting is brass or bronze. If so, that would be unusual since almost all are cast iron or pot metal, rather weak in tensile strength, and easily broken if dropped. Lots of this type around, seemingly endless variations of the same theme.
