Suggestion for your New Year’s Eve party hat:
202a – 19th c Japanese Bronze Benkei & Miidera Bell
Japanese Bronze figure of Benkei & the Miidera bell, that stands approx 9″ high. Good dark colour with some highlights and appears to be late 19th, early 20th c. There is a indentation to rear of bell and Bell slightly oval, otherwise very good.
Benkei in Japanese folklore was a Samurai Monk who was fierce and of great strength in the 12th c. There are various tales, of which this is the main one. The Bell was 5 1/2′ high and similar in diameter and hung at the Miidera Temple, where it had the most beautiful tone when rung. Benkei wanted it for his own Temple and one evening he stole the Bell, carrying it miles back home. The bell was hung in his Temple, but every time the bell was struck it cried out to be back at Miidera Temple. Eventually, Benkei took it to the top of the mountain and kicked it down – it was eventually found by the Miidera Monks and returned to it’s rightful place. The actual Bell still exists and is now in a special shrine at Miidera, Japan.
