Re: Re: So, what is this worth? (Part 146)
Update to Part 143b.
The seller said the figure looked like a bear or fox, and was perhaps a caricature of Napoleon.
I knew of no connection of Napoleon with a fox, and guessed it may have had to do with Napoleon in Russia.
Two viewers who have a copy of this bell sent me the following information:
You recently had this bell in your (What’s it worth?), suggesting that it may be a bear because of Napoleon’s war connection with Russia . We think that it might be a fox. The nose is quite pointed and the paws fairly small, quite unlike a bear’s big feet.
Also, Napoleon is quite well known for two quotations referring to his being a fox at times.
“Je suis parfois un renard et tantôt lion.”
I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion.
(The whole secret of government lies in knowing when to be the one or the other.)
“Je sais, quand il le faut, quitter la peau du lion pour prendre celle du renard.”
I know when it is necessary, how to leave the skin of the lion to take that of the fox.
