Re: Re: Monastery Bell
This is truly a beautiful bell. The rim appears to have the Latin version of the traditional Christian greeting “Dominus Vobiscum” “The Lord be with you” and “Pater Noster” or “Our Father”. The design of the bell is typical of French or Belgian religious bells of the late 19th Century. Its origin would be Roman Catholic. It was probably used as a call bell in a French Monastery. Its size would suggest that it hung in a courtyard as it would be a bit large and therefore too loud to be used indoors. It would be too small to have hung in a bellfry. A smaller bell on a swinging bracket would have been used as a Sacristy bell near the alter, but this bell would have been too large for that purpose.
