These are typical “Petal” style sleigh bells. The numbers do represent the size of the bell. Over the years, sizes 00-18 were produced by various manufacturers. Early bells included the initials of the manufacturer, Hiram Barton, William E. Barton, etc. Later bells simply listed the size. These may have been produced by the N.N. Hill Co. of East Hampton, CT. Their molds were subsequently acquired by Bevin Brothers Bell Manufacturing Co. Strings of sleigh bells often included all of one size for the smaller bells to be used with smaller carriage horses and heavier graduated sets to be used with larger draft horses.
