On welding cast iron or steel, the piece should be taken off the bell, taken to a shop that can weld or braze cast iron, then the whole piece is heated, then it is either welded with a torch and cast iron rod, or brazed. In either case, the entire piece has to be heated first, otherwise the piece just keeps cracking next to the weld. Once the weld or braze is completed, the entire piece is heated again to get the stresses out of it from the welding, then allowed to cool. In the case of a small piece, this is easily done with a torch. For large items like engine blocks, large fire brick ovens are used. Don’t worry, braze is as strong as cast iron welding. — Neil
